1. Who Can Apply for a US Passport?

Permanent residents (Green Card holders) are not eligible for a US passport until they become US citizens.


2. Types of US Passports

Passport Book

  • Used for international travel by air, land, and sea
  • Required for most overseas travel

Passport Card

  • Valid only for land and sea travel between the US and:
    • Canada
    • Mexico
    • The Caribbean
  • Not valid for international air travel

You may apply for both at the same time.


3. First-Time US Passport Applications (Form DS-11)

If you are applying for your first US passport, you must apply in person using Form DS-11.

You Must Apply in Person If:

  • You are applying for your first passport
  • You were under 16 when your last passport was issued
  • Your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
  • Your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago
